Daily Devotion in Psalm 134

Daily Nugget:
Psalm 134 is the last of the hymns sung in the Jerusalem Temple. It is very short. As short as it is, it shows several things about a serious believer:
- He wants to show God he is happy (“blessed” — Psalm 134:1) and content by being near his Master. We, too, can “bless” the Lord by being eager to obey, to worship Him, and to make Him important in our lives.
- He is a “servant.” He is not just a sitter but does what he can for the Lord (vs. 1). He made the long journey to the Temple, showing how serious he was about hearing from the Lord and being as close to Him as possible. Worship was more important to him than what he could have done at home.
Today’s believer can also show God his willing heart by serving and doing something for the Lord. Attending church is important, but it is not working for the Lord. It is encouragement and edification for the believer. The Christian needs to have a ministry that God has laid on his heart to do what God has shown him to do for the cause of Christ.
- He went even at “night.” The last services in the Temple were said to be at night, so God’s servant stayed as long as he could to get all he could from the time of worship. He did not want to miss anything the Lord had for him there.
So many believers today need that same long-for-God attitude. Instead of missing Sunday school service, evening services, or a mid-week meeting, one must attend every church service faithfully. Hence, they, too, miss nothing the Lord may have for them.
- He was, and we can also be, excited to worship the Lord (Psalm 134:3).
The worshiping in the Temple ended a long time ago in Jerusalem. However, Christians today can still have the same longing and love for God. Is worshiping and serving the Lord as important to you as it was to those worshipers in God’s house?

Sanctuary: a place of worship
